Buy the Chief a Cadillac $4.48 In spare, honest, and picturesque language, Rick Steber sets this Spur Award-winning novel on the Klamath Indian reservation in 1961 just days before the tribe’s "termination" by the U. S. government. Each tribal member received a $43,000 settlement from the government in return for the Klamath’s 1-million acre reservation and the end of the Klamath’s tribal status. Buy the Chief a Cadillac explores life on the reservation for three brothers—the alcoholism, violence, greed, and madness—brought on by the white man’s treatment of the tribe, and each brother’s response to the termination settlement. Creek, college-bound and disgusted with reservation life, wants to take his money and run toward success in the white man’s world. Chief, who represents the worst of reservation life, plans to spend his money on a new Cadillac and as much booze as he can possibly drink. Pokey, keeper of the Klamath traditions, plans on refusing the government payout and staying on his people’s land. The brothers’ separate plans send them on course for a deadly collision when the government money finally arrives. |

Buy, Buy Baby $5.48 An investigative journalist examines how marketers exploit infants and toddlers and the broad, often shocking impact of that exploitation on our societyIt’s no secret that toy and media corporations manipulate the insecurities of parents to move their products, but Buy, Buy Baby unveils the chilling fact that these corporations are using — and often funding — the latest research in Child Development to sell directly to babies and toddlers. Susan Gregory Thomas offers even more unnerving epiphanies: the lack of evidence that "educational" shows and toys provide any educational benefit at all for Young Children and the growing evidence that some of these products actually impair early development and could harm our kids socially and cognitively for life. Underlying these revelations is a dangerous economic and cultural shift: our kids are becoming consumers at alarmingly young ages and suffering all the ills that rampant materialism used to visit only on adults — from anxiety to hypercompetitiveness to depression. Thomas blends prodigious reportage with an empathetic voice. Her two daughters were toddlers while she wrote this book, and she never loses sight of the temporal and emotional challenges that parents face. She shows how we can help our kids live at their natural pace, not the frenetic clip that serves only the toddler-industrial complex. Buy, Buy Baby helps us fight the power marketers wield by exposing the false fears they spread. |

Come Buy, Come Buy $31.48 From the 1860s through the early Twentieth Century, Great Britain saw the rise of the department store and the institutionalization of a gendered sphere of consumption. Come Buy, Come Buy considers representations of the female shopper in British women’s writing and demonstrates how women’s shopping practices are materialized as forms of narrative, poetic, and cultural inscription, showing how Women Writers emphasize consumerism as productive of pleasure rather than the condition of seduction or loss. Krista Lysack examines works by Christina Rossetti, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, George Eliot, and Michael Field, as well as the suffragist newspaper Votes for Women, in order to challenge the dominant construction of Victorian femininity as characterized by self-renunciation and the regulation of appetite. Come Buy, Come Buy considers not only literary works, but also a variety of archival sources (shopping guides, women’s fashion magazines, household management guides, newspapers, and advertisements) and cultural practices (department store shopping, shoplifting and kleptomania, domestic economy, and suffragette shopkeeping). This wealth of sources reveals unexpected relationships between consumption, identity, and citizenship, as Lysack traces a genealogy of the woman shopper from dissident domestic spender to aesthetic salonière, from curious shop-gazer to political radical. |

Born to Buy $8.48 Marketing targeted at kids is virtually everywhere — in classrooms and textbooks, on the Internet, even at Girl Scout meetings, slumber parties, and the playground. Product placement and other innovations have introduced more subtle advertising to movies and television. Drawing on her own survey research and unprecedented access to the advertising industry, Juliet B. Schor, New York Times bestselling author of The Overworked American, examines how marketing efforts of vast size, scope, and effectiveness have created "commercialized children." Ads and their messages about sex, drugs, and food affect not just what children want to buy, but who they think they are. In this groundbreaking and crucial book, Schor looks at the consequences of the commercialization of childhood and provides guidelines for parents and teachers. What is at stake is the emotional and social well-being of Our Children.Like Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed, Mary Pipher’s Reviving Ophelia, and Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point, Born to Buy is a major contribution to our understanding of a contemporary trend and its effects on the culture. |

College Street $15.48 With the world in recession, jobs hard to find and no money to buy food, survival was the name of the game for those inhabiting the cities and towns of America. Lost children, lives given up to chance became the focus of the country’s churches and similar charities. College Street was the product of an attempt by the Christian Churches of Kentucky to step in to prevent tragedy on a large scale. The orphans nurtured then became the backbone of the Great Generation, as it is now known. College Street tells the story in dramatic detail. |
